Merrill’s Packaging Pursues ISO 14001 Certification
Merrill’s Packaging actively pursues ISO 14001 certification to honor its environmental sustainability commitment. Through this certification, the company will create a formal Environmental Management System (EMS). This system will evaluate product lifecycles comprehensively.
Leading the Industry Forward
Since 1995, Merrill’s Packaging has pioneered green business practices in medical packaging. Long before sustainability became mainstream, the company trained employees on proper waste disposal. Moreover, the team developed innovative waste reduction strategies across design, development, and distribution.
Achieving Environmental Milestones
In 2009, Merrill’s Packaging became California’s first manufacturer certified as a Green Business for pollution prevention. That same year, the company launched DuraPots, its first product made from 100% recycled materials. Created from scrap HDPE, DuraPots advanced recycling efforts while enabling herb and flower replanting.
Furthermore, Merrill’s Packaging opened a Costa Rica facility in 2010 within the Coyol Free Zone. By serving nearby medical device customers, the company reduced transportation-related greenhouse gas emissions. This strategy proved so effective that Merrill’s Packaging purchased a larger facility there in 2017.
In 2019, the Northern California facility completed the community’s largest solar installation. This nearly half-megawatt system permanently removed energy equivalent to 67 homes from the grid.
Building a Sustainable Future
ISO 14001 certification benefits extend beyond reducing energy costs and minimizing waste. Additionally, it enables more efficient production methods that increase profitability while maintaining responsible practices. The Environmental Management System will help Merrill’s Packaging evaluate and enhance all operations continuously.
Consequently, ISO 14001 positions the company as an industry leader in environmental management. These sustainability initiatives demonstrate Merrill’s Packaging’s dedication to green business practices. The certification represents another milestone in the company’s ongoing environmental journey.
